Letter from Our Executive Directors

Dr. Farhad Islam, Executive Director
Dr. Misam Hashmi, Executive Director

The greatest pull of Doctors For A Cause, for us, lies in its involvement of medical students in its health camps, and its encouragement for doctors to realize their social responsibility.

We both joined DFC as medical students. There are few NGOs that provide med students with the kind of hands-on medical experience that DFC does. As students, we got to assist and interact with doctors at health camps, witness up close the management of patients on a case-to-case basis, and manage the functioning of the camps themselves. It was an experience unlike any other, and the crux of it was in how involved we got to be in the entire process from start to finish despite being students. Actively participating in the treatment and empowerment of individuals from underserved communities was always a transformative experience, and every camp we helped conduct only strengthened our resolve to participate further. We believe DFC provides a unique opportunity for people to contribute meaningfully no matter which stage of their professional journey they are in.

In our combined four-year experience at DFC before we become Executive Directors, we have witnessed doctors at very early stages of their career greatly benefit from volunteering at our Health Camps. Young doctors applying to study abroad and looking for volunteer opportunities form the bulk of our medical force. Certificates and LoRs from an NGO like DFC would undoubtedly help a USMLE or PLAB applicant stand out significantly from their peers. However, our mission runs deeper than that. We wish to encourage doctors to realize their social responsibility and take effective steps towards being not just service-providers, but change-makers.

We believe our generation has the awareness and passion required to change healthcare as we know it. We hope to shape this new landscape with the help of doctors who are unafraid to take matters into their own hands by carving time out of their fast-paced routine to lead this charge through working at the grassroots and building effective healthcare systems.
